A Painting Studio in Wong Chuk Hang, Hong Kong
Project Overview
In Wong Chuk Hang — Hong Kong's reinvented art district, where former industrial floors now hold more than twenty galleries — Roky Design created a ~190 m² (≈2,045 sq ft) studio for a traditional Chinese painting (國畫) artist. More than a place to paint, it had to work as an atelier for creating, teaching and quietly showing work: a calm, light-filled retreat as composed as the ink paintings made inside it. Delivered end-to-end — interior design and fit-out — it turns an irregular, column-broken industrial shell into a serene "home within the painting.
The guiding idea was "a home within the painting" (畫裡的家) — a space that doesn't just display ink art, but feels like stepping inside one. Pure white walls act as empty rice paper; warm timber and soft ink-grey (水墨灰) tones move through the space like brushstrokes, leaving generous negative space for the eye and the mind to rest.
Light is treated as a material. Even, diffused daylight washes the white surfaces so the studio stays calm and shadow-free for painting, while carefully placed warm wood grounds the space and gives it the intimacy of a home rather than a gallery.

The Brief & Challenges
The brief was for a true atelier, not a gallery: a ~190 m² space where the artist could paint in calm, teach small groups, and occasionally show finished work — all while feeling like a second home. In Wong Chuk Hang's creative community, it also had to hold its own among the area's galleries and design studios.
The real challenge was the shell. Like much of Wong Chuk Hang's converted industrial stock, the unit had an irregular floor plan interrupted by structural load-bearing columns that couldn't be removed. Roky Design turned these constraints into the design: the columns were absorbed into clean white volumes and used to gently zone the space — painting, display and gathering — so the awkward geometry reads as intentional calm rather than compromise.
Results & Impact
The finished studio feels less like a fit-out and more like a living ink painting — a serene Wong Chuk Hang retreat where the structure that once limited the space now quietly shapes it.
